- COPYRIGHT & SHAREWARE STATEMENT
-
- KIDTIONARY is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge to
- the user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your friends, but
- please do not give it away altered or as part of another system. The
- essence of "user-supported" software is to provide personal computer
- users with quality software without high prices, and yet to provide
- incentive for programmers to continue to develop new products. If
- you find this program useful and find that you are using KIDTIONARY and
- continue to use KIDTIONARY after a trial period not to exceed 30 days,
- you must make a registration payment of $20+$2(s/h) to LINCOLN BEACH
- SOFTWARE. The $20 registration fee will license one copy for use on
- any one computer at any one time. You must treat this software just
- like a book. An example is that this software may be used by any
- number of people and may be freely moved from one computer location to
- another, so long as there is no possibility of it being used at one
- location while it's being used at another. Just as a book cannot be
- read by two different persons at the same time.
-
- If your school is interested in a Site-License arrangement please
- contact LINCOLN BEACH SOFTWARE at the numbers listed here in the
- documentation.
-
- You are encouraged to pass a copy of KIDTIONARY along to your friends
- for evaluation. Please encourage them to register their copy if they
- find that they can use it. All registered users will receive a copy
- of the latest version of the KIDTIONARY system and printed documentation.
-
- This software and documentation is protected under the United States
- Copyright Laws and International Treaty Provisions. Your support of
- Shareware is appreciated.

-
- WHAT IS IT???!!!
-
- With all that said and done just what is KIDTIONARY!! KIDTIONARY is a
- dictionary for kids. Each screen contains up to three words, a picture
- showing that word in some fashion and a brief definition. If you have
- a Soundblaster compatible sound card you can also have the word either
- spoken or a sound effect that is created by the word. For example, the
- word DOG has the sound of a dog barking but the word throw is spoken.
-
- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
-
- You need a VGA monitor that will display 640x480x16 Colors, a mouse
- and 512k of free memory. A sound card is optional.
-
- DIRECTIONS
-
- After the opening screen has been displayed you may press a mouse button
- or a key on the keyboard to continue. The first group of words to
- appear will be the 'A' letters.
-
- Across the top of the screen you will see all the letters of the
- alphabet along with a ??(search), QUIZ and a HELP button. If there are
- more words in the category beyond those that appear on the screen, a
- button titled MORE will appear in the lower right corner of the screen.
-
- To change between letters simply press the letter you wish to view or
- click the button at the top of the screen with the left mouse button.
- Clicking the right mouse button or ESCAPE will cause you to exit the
- program.
-
- If the more button appears on the screen you may click on it or press the
- TAB key to go to the next set of words in that category.
-
- Clicking on the ??(search) button or pressing the SPACE BAR will put a
- listbox on the screen that contains all of the words in the KIDTIONARY.
- You can use the ARROW keys, PAGE DOWN/PAGE UP keys or click on the arrow
- buttons in the listbox to move around. Once you have highlighted the word
- you wish to view press ENTER or double click the LEFT mouse button on the
- word.
-
- Press the question mark key '?' or clicking on the HELP button will
- display a help screen with most of this information appearing on it.
-
- Finally there is the QUIZ button! Press this button will start the
- SPELLMASTER part of the program. It will randomly display a picture
- and associated definition. The word will be hidden and it will then
- prompt you to type in the word. If you type in the word wrong it will
- let you try again. If you get it right it will ask you if you wish to
- try another word.
-
- If you are stumped you can press the LISTEN button if your system has
- a sound card and you can get more clues. Read the definitions carefully
- because sometimes the word will be in it! If you still have not figured
- out the word you can click on the SHOW WORD button to display the word.
- You can then press HIDE WORD to hide the word and all future words. If
- you leave it on SHOW WORD then all words will be displayed.
-
- Pressing the RETURN TO DICTIONARY button or the ESCAPE key will return
- you back to the KIDTIONARY part of the program.
-
- SOUND CARDS
-
- Kidtionary uses a standard sound blaster compatible driver, but lets
- remember that there is no real standard in the sound card industry
- yet! So your sound card may or may not work. If it acts up at all
- while playing a sound file you may want to delete the file SOUND.CRD
- and when it asks you if you have a sound card say no. Some users
- have reported getting an EMM386 error telling them to add the parameter
- D=32 to their EMM386.SYS line in the config.sys so you may want to see
- if that helps any problems.
-
- WHY SHOULD YOU REGISTER???
-
- So you can get more words!! When you register you will receive another
- diskette containing more words plus a free coupon good for an updated
- dictionary. We will be adding words as time goes on so after your child
- has learned the words that are in the dictionary you are using just mail
- in the coupon and we will send you the latest version of the dictionary
- and the engine that displays the dictionary if there have been any changes
- to that, basically you get A FREE UPGRADE!
-
-
- That's it! Oh and watch out for running animals!
-
